The Best Croatian Wines You Must Try
October 28, 2025Want to take a swim in a lake? But you'd also like it to be near the sea, on an island, and salty too? Or maybe watch dolphins from a 160-meter-high cliff? Or see an island that looks like a flat plate left in the middle of the sea? You can experience all that and more in the Telašćica Nature Park.
Telašćica has been protected since 1980 due to its exceptional natural wealth, and it is located in the southern part of Dugi Otok, in Dalmatia.
Here are several highlights that every visitor must see when they come to Telašćica:
Telašćica Bay
The bay after which the entire nature park is named is one of the most protected harbors in the Adriatic. It stretches inland for as much as 8 kilometers, and within the bay itself there are 6 islands. The most famous among them is Taljurić, which resembles a flat plate more than an island. The smooth surface of this islet has a diameter of just 60 meters and is sure to amaze you with its uniqueness. When you decide to leave the bay, a real treat awaits you as you sail toward the archipelago of the Kornati National Park!
Lake Mir
One of the rare saltwater lakes in Europe is located right in Telašćica. Lake Mir is filled with seawater through numerous underground cracks. In summer, the lake’s temperature can reach up to 33ºC. Because it is extremely salty, its plant and animal life is not very diverse, but you can find therapeutic mud along the southeastern shores of the lake.
Cliffs of Stene
On the outer side of the bay rise enormous cliffs—known as the Stene of Dugi Otok. At their highest point, they reach up to 160 meters, while plunging down to 85 meters below sea level, with a fascinating underwater world that includes the rare red coral. As for the wildlife above the surface, from the cliffs you can spot dolphins or watch the flight of the grey eagle.
How to get to Telašćica?
The best way is by boat – the beautiful bay of Telašćica is best explored by sea. If not on your own, the best transport and tours to Telašćica can be found in the town of Sali.
Pro tip: Sandy paradise Sakarun
Although it’s not part of Telašćica, make sure not to miss Sakarun Beach. While you're already on Dugi Otok, it would be a shame to skip its best-kept secret – a stunning 800-meter-long beach with white sand, a true rarity along the rocky Adriatic coast.
