Banje Beach

Banje Beach (Dubrovnik)

Banje Beach is one of the most famous city beaches in Dubrovnik, located right next to the Old Town, near Ploče. This attractive urban beach is especially recognizable for its unique view of the Dubrovnik city walls, the island of Lokrum, and the open sea, making it one of the most photographed locations in the city. The beach is ideal for those who want to combine swimming and sunbathing with staying in the very heart of Dubrovnik’s historic center.

Banje is very popular among both tourists and locals, primarily due to its excellent location, crystal-clear sea, and additional amenities such as sunbeds, a beach bar, and various water activities during the season. Due to its popularity, especially in the summer months, the beach can get quite crowded, so it is recommended to arrive earlier in the day to easily find a spot and fully enjoy one of the most famous beaches on the Croatian coast.

During the season, sunbeds and umbrellas, a beach bar, and additional amenities for a more enjoyable stay by the sea are available on the beach.

Activities: swimming and sunbathing, kayaking and SUP when the sea is calmer, as well as various water sports for those seeking a more active holiday. A special experience is simply relaxing with a drink on the beach, enjoying one of the most beautiful views of the Old Town of Dubrovnik and the island of Lokrum. During the peak of summer, it is recommended to arrive earlier as the best spots fill up quickly.

One of Banje’s greatest highlights is its location — there are few beaches on the Adriatic that offer such an attractive combination of swimming, views of the city walls, and proximity to the historic center. Because of this, Banje is especially popular among visitors who want to combine a beach holiday with sightseeing in Dubrovnik and enjoying the city’s unique atmosphere.

In addition to standard amenities such as sunbed and umbrella rentals and food and drink options right by the beach, Banje is also known for its livelier atmosphere in the later hours. During the day, it is ideal for swimming and relaxation, while in the evening this area transforms into one of the more popular nightlife spots in Dubrovnik, making it a great choice for both daytime отдых and evening entertainment.

In the immediate vicinity of Banje, there are several other attractive swimming spots. The most well-known is Sveti Jakov, a beach east of the Old Town, known for its more peaceful atmosphere, pebbles, and a beautiful view of Lokrum and the Dubrovnik city walls. Nearby are also the Buža bathing spots, located on the rocks outside the Old Town walls and popular among those who enjoy sunbathing on stone terraces and jumping into the sea, as well as Porporela, a favorite city spot for a quick refreshment and a swim right next to the historic center. For those who want to explore more, all these places can be visited with a pleasant walk from the center of Dubrovnik.

Where to stay:

If you want to be as close as possible to Banje Beach, the best choice for you are Ploče, the Old Town, and the area around Sveti Jakov. Ploče is practically ideal because you are just a few minutes’ walk from the beach, while also being right next to the city walls and the eastern entrance to the old town. If it’s important to you to be able to “jump” to the beach without much planning and then return for a shower and dinner in the city, this part of Dubrovnik will suit you best. Banje is known for its beach bar, water activities, and location right next to the Old Town, so accommodation in this area has a major advantage thanks to its proximity to everything you need on holiday.

If the atmosphere of Dubrovnik matters more to you than being in the first row by the beach, great options are also apartments within the Old Town or just outside the walls, towards Ploče and Pile. This gives you the best combination: in the morning you can walk to Banje, during the day you’re close to restaurants, attractions, and evening strolls, and you don’t depend on a car. For couples, smaller apartments and rooms with a view are especially appealing, while for longer stays apartments with a kitchen, air conditioning, and possibly a balcony are more practical. It’s also good to know that parking in the Old Town area is limited and often complicated, so with this type of accommodation it’s better to choose a location suited for walking rather than relying on a car.

If you want quieter accommodation, more space, and often better value for money, also consider Lapad, Babin Kuk, or Gruž. These parts of the city are not right next to Banje, but they are a good choice if you value comfort, easier access to hotels and apartments, and a more relaxed atmosphere after the crowds of the Old Town. This type of accommodation is often better suited for families and anyone who doesn’t want to spend the entire day in the busiest part of Dubrovnik, and you can reach Banje by public transport, taxi, or a short drive. The easiest way is to filter Dubrovnik on adriatic.hr and look for accommodation on the map in the areas of Ploče, Old Town, or Lapad, depending on whether you want to be right by the beach or in a quieter part of the city. This way, you’ll quickly find accommodation near Banje and Dubrovnik that truly suits you.

Where to eat:

Here are some really great options if you’re spending the day at Banje Beach — from places where you can sit down right after swimming to restaurants for a longer lunch or dinner in the Old Town:

  • Banje Beach Restaurant – the most convenient option if you want to stay literally by the beach; ideal for a cocktail, a light lunch, or dinner with a view of Lokrum and the city walls.
  • Restaurant 360 – a great choice if you’re in the mood for a more special dinner; located near Ploče and known for its refined approach, top location, and a truly memorable experience.
  • Proto – one of the most famous spots for fish and seafood in the Old Town; a good choice when you want something classic Dubrovnik-style, but in a more upscale setting.
  • Gradska Kavana Arsenal – a great option if you want a break while sightseeing; you can stop by for breakfast, lunch, dessert, or dinner right in the heart of the Old Town.
  • Lokanda Peskarija – a good choice if you’re in the mood for fish in a more relaxed atmosphere, near the old port; convenient if you want to continue exploring the Old Town after Banje without going far off your route.
  • Restaurant Dubrovnik – a more elegant option for a quieter dinner in the Old Town; especially good if you’re looking for a more intimate atmosphere and a slower pace.
  • Dubravka 1836 – a great option near Pile if you prefer a more casual restaurant/café style with a nice view and a good location before or after walking the city walls.
  • Nautika – when you want a real “wow” dinner by the sea and fortresses; not for a quick bite after swimming, but for an evening when you’re in the mood for something more special and impressive.

If your priority is not wasting time walking, choose Banje Beach Restaurant. If you want the best balance of location and atmosphere after the beach, Gradska Kavana Arsenal and Lokanda Peskarija are excellent choices. And when you’re in the mood for a dinner you’ll remember long after your trip, the top options are 360, Nautika, and Proto.

What to see:

  • Dubrovnik Old Town (UNESCO): from Banje, you’re just a few minutes away from Ploče and the entrance to the historic center. If you like places with character, this is exactly what you’ll get — stone streets, Stradun, squares, palaces, and that unique atmosphere that makes Dubrovnik truly memorable.

  • City Walls: if you want to experience Dubrovnik from the best perspective, take a walk along the walls. The view from above of the red rooftops, the sea, Lokrum, and the fortresses is one of those sights truly worth seeing at least once — just keep in mind that in summer it’s best to go early in the morning or in the late afternoon.

  • Lokrum: you can see it from Banje all the time, and it’s very easy to visit on a half-day trip. If you feel like escaping the city crowds for some shade, greenery, and a slower pace, Lokrum is a great choice for a short getaway from Dubrovnik’s center.

  • Dubrovnik Cable Car / Mount Srđ: when you want the best panoramic view of the city, the walls, and the Elaphiti Islands, the cable car to Srđ is one of the top options. It’s especially great around sunset, when Dubrovnik looks even more impressive than from sea level.

  • Revelin Fortress: located right next to Ploče, it’s a great stop if you want to see another important part of Dubrovnik’s defensive system. Besides its historical significance, this part of the city has a special energy, combining monumental architecture, views of the harbor, and proximity to the Old Town.

  • Rector’s Palace: if you’re interested in the history of the Dubrovnik Republic and want to add a bit of culture to your beach day, this is one of the most beautiful places for a short visit in the Old Town. The interior and atmosphere give you a great sense of how important and well-organized Dubrovnik once was as a city-state.

  • Old City Harbor and Porporela: after swimming at Banje, you can continue with a relaxed seaside walk here. It’s a perfect part of the city for a break, photos, and those “no rush” moments when you just want to soak in Dubrovnik without a strict plan.

Bonus “quick & easy”: stay at Banje until late afternoon and watch how the view of the city walls, Old Town, and Lokrum changes — there are few places in Dubrovnik where you get a beach, sightseeing, and one of the most beautiful city views all in one spot.

What to do:

  • Swim and sunbathe on one of Dubrovnik’s most famous beaches, right next to the Old Town. The biggest advantage of Banje is that you have the sea, a view of Lokrum, and the city walls all at once, so even just lying on a towel here feels like a special experience.

  • Try water sports if swimming alone isn’t enough. During the season, Banje offers various sea activities, including kayaking, SUP, and other fun options that are perfect if you want a more active day at the beach.

  • Relax in a beach bar or beach club and take a break from the sun with a drink and a view of the Old Town. If you enjoy a mix of beach and a more urban summer vibe, Banje is one of the few places where it all comes together effortlessly.

  • Stay for sunset, as this is when the atmosphere at Banje is at its most special. As the light falls on the city walls and Lokrum, the beach takes on a completely different mood — one of the most beautiful moments of the day if you enjoy photography or simply soaking in the view.

  • Walk to the Old Town whenever you feel like a change of pace. From Banje, it’s just a few minutes to Ploče and the entrance to the historic center, making it easy to combine swimming, a stroll along Stradun, and a break in one of the restaurants or cafés.

  • Continue towards the Old Harbor or Porporela if you feel like staying by the sea after the beach. It’s a great option when you don’t want to end the day right away, but instead extend it with a relaxed walk and soaking in Dubrovnik at your own pace.

  • Enjoy the evening atmosphere if you like livelier places. Banje is known for transforming from a city beach during the day into a more elegant and vibrant evening spot with music, drinks, and views of the illuminated city walls.

Other information:

Banje is one of the most visited beaches in Dubrovnik during summer, mainly because it’s located right next to the Old Town, so it’s best to come early in the morning or in the late afternoon if you want a more relaxed experience. The beach is easily accessible on foot from the Ploče area, but keep in mind there are stairs on the way down. If you’re arriving by car, it’s more practical to park a bit further away or take a taxi, as the area around the Old Town is often busy with traffic and parking is limited.

If you have photos or videos from Banje, feel free to share them – we’d be happy to publish them.
