The Secret of the Dragon’s Eye | An Unusual Lake Entwined with Legends
January 7, 2025Zadar, a city rich in history, heritage, and culture, is renowned for its sea organ that plays melodies composed by the Adriatic Sea, the sacred Church of St. Donatus that captivates architecture enthusiasts, and the waterfront where, according to Alfred Hitchcock, you can witness the most beautiful sunset in the world.
All these historical attractions, picturesque views, and the spirit embodied by the locals make Zadar a city that will forever leave cherished memories in your life.
However, this gem of northern Dalmatia has one flaw—its size.
You see, all the beauties of Zadar can be experienced in just one slightly longer day, which raises the question:
What happens after I’ve explored the entire city?
That’s where we come in.
Whether you need to fill the last day of your trip or you’re a regular Zadar resident looking for an escape from everyday life, we bring you a list of the best destinations for a day trip around Zadar.
Nin

The closest destination on this list, just a 25-minute drive from Zadar, is Nin. This small town, known as the cradle of the Croatian nation, will captivate you with its rich history told through its monuments, ancient buildings, and natural beauty.
Wandering through the old core of Nin, you’ll encounter numerous landmarks, such as the Church of the Holy Cross, which holds the title of the smallest cathedral in the world, or the remains of a Roman temple. You can also admire the artistic works of master sculptor Ivan Meštrović, who enriched this town with statues of Prince Branimir and Gregory of Nin, the protector of Nin.
What makes this place truly special are the many long sandy beaches, popular among families with children. The most famous beach in Nin, also the longest sandy beach in Croatia, called Queen’s Beach, is located 3 kilometers west of the center and features mud that locals believe has healing properties.
After a mud bath, you can visit the saltworks to learn about the ancient production of salt and grab an authentic souvenir at the Salt Museum. The untouched nature around the saltworks is home to endemic and endangered animals, especially birds, so take a walk along the wooden paths and enjoy the natural beauty.
Zrmanja Canyon

The next destination on the list is the Zrmanja River Canyon, located just a 40-minute drive from Zadar.
This canyon, protected as a geomorphological natural monument, is distinguished by its 200-meter-high cliffs rising above the 69-kilometer-long river. Climbing up to the plateau, you’ll witness breathtaking views of the river deeply carved into the canyon, leaving you in awe.
Adding to its charm is the fact that the creators of *Winnetou* chose this very canyon as a filming location, further proof of its beauty.
Crystal-clear waters, impressive waterfalls, and the magnificent canyon draw visitors year-round. Zrmanja is often called the "beauty and the beast" by adventurers, and for a good reason: it is divided into two sections. The upper part of the canyon, ideal for rafting and kayaking, stretches from Kaštel Žegarski to Muškovci. The lower section, characterized by a calmer flow, is often referred to as the European Grand Canyon, perfect for sea kayaking, stand-up paddling, and boat rides.
Berberov Buk

If you extend your drive by 15 minutes from the Zrmanja Canyon, you’ll come across the idyllic village of Muškovci. The center of activity here is Berberov Buk — a 200-meter-long waterfall surrounded by hospitality venues where you can enjoy a rich gastronomic offering.
A large green meadow provides ample space for many visitors, so it never feels crowded. The usual challenges of river bathing spots, such as lack of parking, limited amenities, or difficult accessibility, are not an issue here. Everything is close by, with plenty of places to eat and drink. Naturally, as with any respectable river bathing spot, there’s a rope tied to a tree for launching yourself into the water. Fun is guaranteed!
Kudin Bridge

After marveling at the spectacular views of the Zrmanja Canyon, make sure to visit its most famous and longest tributary — the Krupa River. The path will lead you to the charming village of Golubić, where you’ll easily find a sign pointing to the trail leading to this natural beauty. Park your car at the first clearing on the right and head on foot to the lookout, which is just a ten-minute walk away.
The hidden gem of the Krupa River is a bridge known as Kudin Most. This dry-stone bridge, over 100 meters long, is a symbol of love. According to legend, a young man named Kude built the bridge with 12 arches about 200 years ago to reach the other side of the river and be with his love, Mila.
An interesting fact about Kudin Most is that it is not overly popular, meaning it doesn’t attract many visitors. Because of this, when you visit this picturesque spot, you’ll be enchanted by its peaceful and relaxing atmosphere.
Vransko lake
Vransko Lake, located approximately 30 kilometers northwest of Zadar, is a fascinating destination for a day trip. As the largest natural lake in Croatia, it covers about 30 square kilometers, and its unique beauty and biological diversity make it a perfect spot for nature lovers and active travelers.
The easiest way to reach Vransko Lake is by car, with the journey taking about 40 minutes. Upon arrival, you’ll first notice the panoramic views of the lake and its surroundings, which include numerous wetlands and lush green areas. The lake is characterized by its high water level, which changes seasonally, contributing to its dynamic ecosystem.
The lake is surrounded by nature trails ideal for hiking and cycling. Particularly appealing are the trails leading to viewpoints where you can enjoy stunning views of the entire lake. One of the most popular viewpoints is Kamenjak on the northern side of the lake, offering breathtaking vistas of the entire area and, in the distance, the Adriatic coastline.
For birdwatching enthusiasts, Vransko Lake provides incredible opportunities. Here, you can spot numerous species of migratory birds, including white storks, herons, and various types of ducks. Nearby, there is an ornithological center where you can learn more about local bird species and their habits.
If you enjoy water activities, renting a boat or canoe allows you to explore the lake from a different perspective. This quiet ride lets you get closer to natural habitats and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the lake.
One important tip for visitors is to prepare for varying weather conditions. While summers are usually sunny, winters can be cold and foggy, so it’s advisable to bring layered clothing and waterproof gear. Additionally, since the area around the lake is rich in wildlife, using insect repellent is recommended, especially in spring and summer. Bonus tip: you’ll experience the richest flora and fauna in late spring or autumn.
For visitors with children, the area around the lake offers safe and engaging spaces for play, including small beaches and designated picnic areas.

Explore the historical "bunkers" built by the Yugoslav army, now transformed into a climbing center for kids. These bunkers provide insight into the park’s history and offer a fun way for children to learn.
Mirila, stone monuments for the deceased, can be found throughout the park. These stones, dating back to the 17th century, mark places where bodies rested while being transported from the mountains to the church. The slabs indicate the height of the deceased and were considered the resting place of the soul, while the body was buried in a grave.
