Bačvice Beach

Bačvice Beach (Split)

Bačvice Beach is the most famous city beach in Split, located just a few minutes’ walk from Diocletian’s Palace and the city’s main waterfront promenade (Riva). This sandy bay in the heart of Split is a rarity on the Croatian coast, as most beaches are pebbly, while Bačvice offers soft sand and shallow waters, ideal for sunbathing and swimming.

Bačvice is very popular among all generations – families with children, young people, and tourists – primarily because of its gentle entrance into the sea and safe, shallow seabed that gradually gets deeper. Due to its location and easy accessibility, the beach can be very crowded during the summer months, so it is recommended to arrive earlier in the day to secure a good spot for your sunbed or towel.

During the season, sunbeds and umbrellas, beach bars, and basic beach facilities are available.

Activities: swimming and sunbathing, snorkeling along the edges of the bay, SUP or kayaking when the sea is calmer, as well as relaxing with a drink at a beach bar. At the peak of summer, it is recommended to arrive earlier, as the best spots fill up quickly.

One of Bačvice’s special features is the traditional game of picigin, which originated right here. This characteristic Split “ball game” is played in shallow water — the goal is to keep the small ball in the air as long as possible without letting it fall into the sea — and locals play it every summer, often with impressive jumps and acrobatics.

In addition to standard amenities such as sunbed and umbrella rentals, showers, and changing cabins, Bačvice also offers a wide selection of bars and restaurants along the promenade, where you can refresh yourself with a drink or enjoy local specialties with a sea view. In the evening, this area becomes one of the centers of Split’s nightlife, making it an excellent choice for both daytime relaxation and evening entertainment.

Near Bačvice

In the immediate vicinity of Bačvice, there are several other popular city beaches. The closest are Firule, a well-maintained pebble beach known for its sports courts and more relaxed atmosphere, and Ovčice, a smaller and more intimate beach often chosen by locals for a quieter swim. Walking along the coast to the west, you will also reach Trstenik, a spacious beach with a combination of pebbles and concrete sunbathing platforms, ideal for longer stays, water sports, and enjoying the open sea views.

Where to stay:

If you're looking for accommodation in Split near Bačvice, the best choice is apartments and rooms in the Bačvice, Firule, and Grad neighborhoods – you’ll be close enough to reach the beach on foot in just a few minutes, while still being near the city center and the Riva promenade. Apartments around Diocletian’s Palace and the city harbor are also a great option, as they combine proximity to the sea, restaurants, and nightlife.

For a quieter atmosphere and slightly easier parking, many visitors choose Lokve or Trstenik, where you often get more space and a better balance between price and location, while Bačvice is still just a short walk or a few minutes’ drive away. If you’re traveling with family, accommodation with a kitchen and balcony is very practical, while couples usually prefer smaller apartments near the beach and the old town.

The easiest way: on adriatic.hr, filter Split and choose apartments near the sea on the map. This way you can quickly find accommodation near Bačvice that suits you best.

Where to eat:

Here are several reliable options (from Bačvice towards Firule and the city center):

  • Tortuga Grill & Pub (Bačvice) – relaxed atmosphere right by the beach; burgers, grilled dishes, and cold drinks after swimming.
  • Caffe Bar Žbirac (Bačvice) – an iconic seaside spot; more for drinks and light bites, but with one of the most beautiful views of the city beaches.
  • Konoba Nevera (Firule) – traditional Dalmatian cuisine and fresh fish, a quieter option a few minutes’ walk from Bačvice.
  • Lanterna (along the Firule–Zenta promenade) – a seaside restaurant known for fish dishes and a romantic atmosphere.
  • Konoba Fetivi (Varoš/Matejuška) – Dalmatian classics and seafood; often mentioned in the Michelin Guide.
  • Konoba Matejuška (Varoš) – a family-run tavern with fresh fish and a local vibe, close to the Riva.
  • Bokeria Kitchen & Wine (Old Town) – a more modern menu and an excellent wine list, very popular (reservation recommended).
  • Fife (Matejuška) – relaxed and affordable, generous portions, a great option for lunch after the beach.

What to see:

  • Diocletian’s Palace (UNESCO): just about a ten-minute walk from Bačvice – the heart of Split, with the Peristyle, underground cellars, and narrow stone streets full of life.

  • Riva and the city harbor: perfect for an evening walk by the sea, with views of the islands and boats, and relaxing in one of the many cafés.

  • Bačvice Summer Cinema: one of the oldest open-air cinemas in Dalmatia, a favorite spot for movie nights under the stars during summer.

  • Firule and Zenta: a seaside promenade leading to quieter city beaches and a small marina, great for a morning coffee or a relaxed walk.

  • Cathedral of St. Domnius + bell tower: climb the bell tower for a panoramic view of the city, Bačvice Beach, and the Port of Split.

Bonus “quick and easy”: stay at Bačvice until sunset and watch people playing picigin in the shallow water – the most authentic Split scene right in front of you.

What to do:

  • Swimming and sunbathing on the sandy beach with a long shallow area (arrive earlier in summer due to crowds).

  • Playing picigin – a traditional Split game that originated right here on Bačvice; you can watch the locals or even join in.

  • Nightlife – Bačvice is known for its summer atmosphere, beach bars, and clubs near the beach.

  • Seaside walk towards Firule and Zenta – an easy coastal route, perfect for a morning coffee or sunset stroll.

  • Bačvice Summer Cinema – watch a movie under the open sky during warm summer evenings.

  • Water sports – pedal boats, SUP, and other seasonal activities available nearby.

  • Riva and the Old Town – a short walk takes you to Diocletian’s Palace, restaurants, and the lively city atmosphere.

Other information:

During summer, Bačvice is one of the most visited beaches in Split, especially in July and August, so it’s best to arrive early in the morning or in the late afternoon. The sea is shallow and gradually deepens, making it suitable for families with children, but due to the large number of swimmers extra caution is recommended. During peak season, parking in the surrounding streets fills up quickly, so it’s often more practical to arrive on foot or by taxi from the city center.
