The story of the beach

A city beach that does not feel urban

Aerial view of Kašjuni Beach — a turquoise cove beneath Marjan’s pine forest

Kašjuni from above. A south-west-facing cove tucked between Marjan’s pine forest and the open sea — ten minutes from Diocletian’s Palace, yet with the feel of an island.

Few cities on the Mediterranean can offer this: in just ten minutes, you can travel from a seventeen-century-old UNESCO-listed palace to a turquoise cove beneath a centuries-old pine forest. Kašjuni proves that you do not have to leave Split to escape it.

Located on the southern slopes of Marjan Forest Park, around 3.5 km west of the Riva waterfront, Kašjuni is a pebble cove opening towards the south-west — with views of the open sea and the silhouettes of the central Dalmatian islands. Instead of buildings, a pine forest rises above the beach, giving the cove an almost island-like atmosphere despite its city address.

The Split Tourist Board describes Kašjuni as one of the most beautiful beaches in the city.

The beach has been modernised in recent years — with concrete sunbathing areas beside the pebbles, sun loungers and canopies available to hire, and Joe's Beach Lounge & Bar as the social hub of the cove. By day, it is all about swimming and paddleboarding; towards evening, cocktails come with the most beautiful sunset in the city: its western orientation means the sun sinks straight into the sea in front of you.

The day unfolds in three acts: mornings belong to locals and swimmers who arrive before work, afternoons to tourists and sun loungers, and evenings to everyone who knows that the best show at Kašjuni is completely free — on the horizon, at around 8 p.m. in summer.

Did you know?

Marjan, the hill above the beach, is known among Split locals as the "lungs of the city" — the forest park has been protected since 1964 [CHECK] and remains a favourite retreat for runners and cyclists. Kašjuni is its most beautiful "gateway to the sea".

What to expect

Six things to know before you arrive

Practical information that makes the difference between an average day and a truly great day at Kašjuni.

Getting there

Around 3–3.5 km from the Riva

By car or taxi, it is around 10 minutes from the centre; city bus line 12 gets you close, followed by a short walk; on foot from the centre, allow around 50–60 minutes, especially in summer.

Best time to visit

Before 10 a.m. or in the early evening

Mornings are best for quieter swimming and easier parking; early evening is ideal for photographs because the beach faces west and stays sunny for longer.

Entering the sea

Pebbles, with deeper water close to shore

The beach is pebbly and the sea is very clear, but the seabed drops away more quickly than at shallow family beaches. Water shoes are useful, and extra care is needed with young children.

Shade and prices

Pines along the edge + paid sun loungers

Entry to the beach is free, but rentals are more expensive: in high season, expect to pay roughly €35–45 for a sun lounger or set, while cabanas and canopies can cost €100 or more.

Facilities

Beach bar, showers and sun loungers

The main part of the beach has a beach bar and food and drink options, as well as sun loungers, showers and toilets. Check seasonal equipment hire and additional services on site.

Season

Best from June to September

July and August are the busiest months; June and September are better choices for the same sea, fewer crowds and a more comfortable journey. May and October depend on the weather.

Climate and weather

When to visit Kašjuni

A Mediterranean climate, long warm summers and a location beneath Marjan make Kašjuni an excellent choice from late spring to early autumn — check the current conditions before heading to the beach.

Best time to visit

Late May – mid-September — warm sea, more settled weather and fewer crowds at the beginning and end of the season.

Experiences

Things to do at Kašjuni

Six ways to turn a swim into a full day out — from snorkelling along the edges of the cove to walking on Marjan and watching the sunset.

01

Swimming and bathing

The large pebble cove provides plenty of space for swimming and bathing. Kašjuni is also popular with families, but children and less confident swimmers should always be supervised.

Duration As long as you like
Cost Free
Tip Water shoes make it easier to walk on the pebbles and enter the sea.
02

Snorkelling along the edges of the cove

The rocky edges of the cove are more interesting for snorkelling than the central pebble section. Bring your own mask and snorkel and stay within the designated safe swimming area.

Duration 30–90 min
Equipment Bring your own
Tip Do not approach the rocks when the sea is rough or the waves are strong.
03

Paddleboarding or kayaking with your own equipment

When conditions are calm, the cove can serve as a starting point for a short paddle along the Marjan coastline. Permanent paddleboard or kayak rental directly on the beach has not currently been reliably confirmed.

Duration 1–2 hours
Rental Unconfirmed
Tip Check the wind, sea conditions and local signs before entering the water.
04

Stay until sunset

Late afternoon brings softer light, more comfortable temperatures and an attractive view across the open part of the cove. The exact sunset time changes throughout the season.

Duration 30–60 min
Cost Free
Tip Check the sunset time for your chosen date before arriving.
05

Walk or run on Marjan

Above Kašjuni lies a network of roads and trails through Marjan Forest Park. Its highest point is Telegrin at 178 metres, but the duration and difficulty of the climb depend on the route you choose.

Duration 1–2 hours
Difficulty Depends on the route
Tip Bring water and footwear suitable for climbing, gravel tracks and woodland trails.
06

Swim with your dog

A separate dog beach is located immediately beside the main Kašjuni beach and is divided from it by rocks. This allows you to spend time by the sea with your pet without using the main swimming area.

Location Beside the main beach
Cost Free
Tip Bring water for your pet and use the designated dog-friendly area.

Practical tips for Kašjuni Beach

Six practical topics to help you avoid the crowds, find a good spot and enjoy a safer day at one of Split’s best-known beaches.

Tip 01

What you should bring

Kašjuni is a well-maintained pebble beach, but a few items in your bag can make a big difference during a full day by the sea.

  • Water shoes — the pebbles are larger in places and can be uncomfortable for sensitive feet
  • SPF 50+ sunscreen — natural shade is not equally available across all parts of the beach
  • Plenty of water — especially if you are visiting with children or staying until the evening
  • Snorkelling mask — the edges of the cove are more interesting than the central section
  • Cash and card — it is useful to have both payment options
  • Power bank — especially if you use navigation, take photos or check transport information

Key point: If you are staying until sunset, bring a light top or a towel to wrap around yourself, as it can feel cooler by the sea in the evening.

Tip 02

The best time to arrive

Kašjuni has a predictable daily rhythm. Arriving early means calmer water, an easier search for a good spot and less time wasted looking for parking.

  • 07:30–09:30 The quietest part of the day. The beach is considerably emptier, and conditions are more pleasant for swimming and photography.
  • 09:30–12:00 The beach fills up quickly. During the high season, parking spaces and the best spots by the sea become noticeably harder to find.
  • 12:00–16:00 The largest crowds and strongest sun. This is the least pleasant time if you prefer a quieter visit.
  • 17:00–19:00 The crowds gradually begin to ease. A good choice for a shorter swim and more comfortable temperatures.
  • Before sunset The best evening atmosphere. Arrive a little earlier to find a free spot along the western part of the cove.

Key point: If you do not want to rely on limited parking, check the current timetable for city bus line 12, which serves the Kašjuni and Marjan area.

Tip 03

Visiting with children — what you need to know

Kašjuni is popular with families, but it is not a typical sandy beach with a long shallow section. It is therefore even more important to choose a suitable time and keep children under constant supervision.

  • Arrive in the morning — there are fewer crowds, the sun is gentler and it is easier to find a good spot
  • Bring water shoes — both smaller and larger pebbles can be uncomfortable for young children
  • Use armbands or a flotation belt for children who are not yet confident swimmers
  • Set up closer to the water to avoid frequently walking across hot pebbles
  • Plan a break from the sun during the hottest part of the day
  • Do not rely solely on a lifeguard — service availability depends on the season and time of day

Key point: The seabed and depth are not the same throughout the entire cove. Keep children within arm’s reach, especially when the beach is crowded or the wind begins to pick up.

Tip 04

Sea conditions, depth and safety

Clear water and a sheltered cove are Kašjuni’s greatest advantages, but conditions can change with the wind and increased boat traffic beyond the designated swimming area.

  • Do not jump from the rocks before checking the depth and the area below you
  • Do not swim outside the designated zone if there is increased boat traffic beyond the cove
  • Do not overestimate your fitness when stronger winds or waves develop
  • Do not leave valuables unattended when the beach and bar are at their busiest
  • Do not enter the sea after drinking alcohol or when you feel exhausted or overheated
  • Do not ignore warnings from lifeguards, concession holders or the relevant authorities

Good to know: Check the wind and sea conditions before arriving. A calm morning and a windy afternoon can offer completely different experiences at the same beach.

Tip 05

The best viewpoints and times to visit

Most visitors remain in the central part of the beach. For a quieter experience, a better photograph or a more interesting place to snorkel, explore the edges of the cove.

Snorkelling

The rocky edges of the cove

The underwater scenery along the edges is more varied than in front of the central, most frequently visited part of the beach.

A quieter visit

Further from the main entrance

A few extra minutes of walking often means fewer people passing by and a more comfortable place for your towel.

Photography

Early morning

Softer light, fewer people and a calmer sea surface produce the clearest photographs of the cove.

Evening experience

Sunset

Stay after the afternoon crowds and find a spot with an open view towards the west.

Key point: Early morning offers the best combination of peace and photography, while the best atmosphere arrives before sunset, once the daytime crowds begin to ease.

Tip 06

What to do in an emergency

In the event of a serious injury, an incident in the sea or a sudden deterioration in someone’s health, do not improvise. First alert the lifeguard if one is present, then call 112.

  • Problem in the sea — alert the lifeguard and do not attempt a risky rescue without equipment
  • Serious injury — do not move the injured person unless they are in immediate danger
  • Overheating — move the person into the shade and seek professional help if their condition does not improve
  • Missing child — immediately notify the lifeguard, beach staff and people nearby
  • Sting or reaction — do not rub the affected area and seek medical advice in the event of a severe reaction
  • Calling the emergency services — clearly state that you are at Kašjuni Beach below Marjan

Key point: Save the number 112 and take a photo of the contact list in the sidebar before arriving at the beach.
